There’s probably more to this story than I have access to, but from the little I know, I have no qualms about jumping to conclusions and offering a hot take –

They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but this probably comes pretty close for the Venetian. This sounds like a half-baked anti-AP policy ham-handedly implemented by oafish floorpeople.

I get it that they don’t want winners winning. They want all the money for themselves, which is perfectly understandable. I get it that they don’t want APs constantly riffling their Phoenix Link machines and picking off all the plays that would otherwise go to oblivious booger-eating morons (if not for those darned APs).

But this sounds like they have now alienated a popular public figure who is CLEARLY not an AP (based on what I’ve seen), who has thousands of booger-eating followers who would like nothing better than to emulate their hero, Vegas Matt, when they’re not watching videos of his “expertise” put into action.

Venetian could have been “the place Vegas Matt plays for fun when he’s not hawking FanDuel – so come on down and win at Venetian just like Vegas Matt!!!”, but instead, Venetian are now the meanies who kicked out Vegas Matt for being Vegas Matt and doing Vegas Matt things. And everyone loves Vegas Matt. “Anyone who hates Vegas Matt must hate us too”, they must be thinking…

I heard about this one. Some thoughts:

The Venetian cares about advantage players. Whenever I’m there, I feel myself being watched. That said, caring about APs and actually knowing what the heck is going on are two different things.

I think, as you kind of hinted at, there’s more to this story.

My guess—and let me be clear: this is just a guess—is that, yes, Vegas Matt had a huge hit on Phoenix Link, and yes, he did stop playing afterward with the counter higher and in a more favorable state. But then what? Did he really just pack up shop? Or did he maybe call or text someone? Hey buddy, I am leaving a huge bet on Phoenix Link. Stop by now if you want it.

Then maybe the buddy shows up, maybe wins a lot more, and the Venetian—not well-versed on advantage play to begin with—reasons, “Screw this Vegas Matt guy. He’s gone!”

The result? Matt looks good; they look bad. He plays it off as an innocent slot rube.

I think Matt and his team, from what I’ve seen and heard in their commentary, would know a grand slam AP opportunity on some machines (Regal Riches, Phoenix Link, Buffalo Link, a few others). But they are also fine with taking AP stuff much too early for the content.

Matt 100% would want to distance himself from anything AP (see his tweet). Casinos, I’d assume, pay him to show up. He has other sponsorships. All of the clicks his videos get. He does not want to be associated with anything AP, as that could jeopardize everything. Why would a casino bring in a guy like that with open arms? Not that I have a 1/1,000th of his following, but you think El Cortez or any other casino would want me to show up, play something AP, record it for people, and then leave? No, they want Vegas Matt—who seems like a class act from what I’ve seen—showing up, bringing that energy and fun personality. They don’t want Vegas Matt the part-time AP.

Anyway, that’s my take. I think we’re still in the Wild West days of casinos and advantage players.

From talk on the street, I’d say the guys who came in and hit it after VM were part of the play. Don’t know for sure, but it has all the earmarks of that being the case.
