Guys, I went for the gold and got trashed. Not too badly trashed but a loss of 340x my bet 🙁

The moment I saw a 44 gold number I got excited because that was the first time seeing gold that high. I quickly ran into the bathroom to find any justification for playing it. While in the bathroom stall I quickly skimmed the strategy page for any inkling that 44 gold, 16 purple, and a default 5 green was a potential play. I knew green needed to be at least 20 and purple needed to be 35 but didn’t recall what gold needed to be or if there were any combinations.

My heart sank as I read the Magic Treasures Gold strategy where it says it is not worth taking the risk to solo-chase the top pot. However, there is this section on combos:

Any combo involving gold should have more emphasis on green or purple. Something like a 16 green, 34 gold (at least 50). Or a 25 purple/35 gold (at least 60). That way, you’re off after hitting a color besides gold and have a chance of backing into an inflated top pot.

A glimmer of hope came from the “backing into an inflated top pot.” The gold and purple added up to the combination of 60 mentioned above. Of course the focus should have been on purple but I felt owed a good win (a bad place mentally to be in when in a casino) and was too excited to see a 44 for the first time. I decided to take the gamble and throw a $100 into the machine. It went well for the first several hundred spins. At one point during those first several hundred spins I was up 300x my bet and the gold kept going up. It seemed like I would get random bonus games often and they were paying well. During this time the gold 44 eventually went all the way to the max of 50. I felt destined to hit that 50 and get at least a major for $1,000. Then there was a dead timespan where nothing was hitting. I went from a gain of 300x my bet to feeding the machine another $500. My eyes were set on hitting that 50 at all costs. When I did hit the 50 gold, it paid me back nearly half of what I put in.

With all that said, I want to temper my expectations the next time, if ever, I come across this situation.

My question is, should I just ignore the top gold number even if it is at the max of 50 or close to that?

I just wouldn’t mess with a solo Gold. Tough to be certain of the return % without a PAR sheet but it’s hard to imagine that a maxed out Gold with reset Purple and Green is +EV.

Yes, I would not chase gold if there’s no “get off” moment with a green or purple trigger. If my notes were unclear, I do apologize. I’ll make that clearer in the write-up.

I’ve had even the purple max out at 50 a few times. The gold being in the mid-40s, although not the most common, is nothing I’d start salivating over without a solid green and/or purple paired with it.

Magic Treasures Gold is too volatile to ever chase just gold, even if it’s at the max of 50.
