It’s truly an honor to be here right now—seeing some AP royalty on this site really puts things in perspective.
For those of you who’ve been around a while, I have a question: What’s the deal with all my friends who claim they want to “play,” but can’t seem to put in even the bare minimum effort to learn advantage-play slots? Out of all the AP opportunities in a casino, slots seem like they’d require the least amount of work. I’ve handed them the materials, shared the resources—and still, nothing.
Today, I’m heading to a casino armed with everything I’ve learned from this site and others. But I’m going solo. I just can’t take my friends anymore. I always end up babysitting them, biting my tongue, and forcing a smile while they regale me with their latest gambling fallacies.
Hah! Most of my buddies understand slots at this point from everything I’ve told them over the years, but they are not into the grind of it. They want to walk in for 20 minutes and find some home run (don’t we all). But they don’t want to spend hours in a casino or casinos and play only a few things sometimes.
That’s been the main hang-up I’ve dealt with when bringing friends or family.
Kevin Hart popularized the line, “Everybody wants to be famous, but nobody wants to do the work.” That’s what I’ve experienced. Not that anyone is getting “famous” off slot playing haha. But the general idea.
There are a few different things at play. I think first and foremost is that they’re just gamblers at heart…they like the feeling of being in action, they don’t like the feeling of calculating, waiting or doing hard work in their leisure time…they wanna gamble and by god that’s what they’ll do. It’s not fun for them.
The other major thing is just that people like to believe that they already know everything. They would rather carry on believing whatever they believe than look something up that might call into question what they think they know. In fact, many people state that they believe basic strategy in blackjack was written by the house. It’s easier for them to believe that than to believe that their intuition is wrong. Once someone already has a belief in something, particularly when there’s this much variance involved, they can find anything to justify their belief…it’s not logically coherent usually, but it’s enough for a human brain.
That said, I get it. I hate that there’s a whole crowd of people out there, and not just with regards to gambling, that can’t be bothered to use all of the information at their fingertips. Whether that’s taking a moment to google “blackjack strategy” before sitting down at a table or failing to take a second to read the “Pricing” page on a website before emailing support to ask what the price is 🫠
