I’ve been around the block a few times, and I know not to be taken in by demo screens such as the tall columns on Buffalo Ascension, or the 26 meter on Wu Jin Pen, amd similar fakeouts designed to get some player engagement with a machine. Another example is Treasure Blast, where the Envelope or Drum on the demo screen disappears as soon as you touch a bet button (to chase the Envelope you thought you just spotted…)
But this one on the 2X 3X Phoenix game strikes me as one of the slickest fakeouts on the floor. First, because the game has physical reels, there is no Demo screen. Instead, game information is shared on the banner screen above the reels. Phoenix banners offer real information about meter numbers, but if nobody touches the machine for a while, the banner mixes in a fakeout in addition to the available meter readings.
Some days I would be perfectly willing to muscle Diamond Lil out of the way to take that Green 14 for myself…that is, until I find out that $1.20 is a phantom denomination. Or maybe I need to convince a tech to add another button to the pad.
Pretty sneaky of them.
